Many were saved from being lost: The Diary, the Temple, the rostral Column (which was a souvenir of the expedition by Cook by Augustin Pajou) were taken stone by stone from Méréville to Jeure and rebuilt at the end of the XIX century.

In 1805 ‘Mad’ Jack Fuller commissioned Sir Robert Smirke to design a small ‘temple’ rotunda, elsewhere in the park Smirke also designed the observatory, complete with a Camera Obscura.

Brightling Park, Brightling

In 1811 Fuller built his own tomb, a pyramid, which stands 25ft high in the churchyard of St Thomas à Becket, Brightling. According to local legend Fuller was entombed in the pyramid in full dress and top hat seated at a table set with a roast chicken and a bottle of wine.

The windows allowed Stokes to display his skills as a stained-glass artist: the Four Seasons are represented by wild flowers, while a greenfinch decorates the semi-circular eyebrow window. The Four Elements are symbolised by a badger sett for Earth; barn owls for Air; the sunset for Fire and flooded fields for Water.

To reach his sheep field Stokes had to cross a 48 acre all-weather gallop, where the owner wanted the central area to be cleared of surface stones so the horses could graze. As he went back and forth, Stokes collected the stone, with which he constructed Cairns.

As he went back and forth to his field, Stokes collected 20 or 30 barrows of stone a day, with which he constructed an artistic range of Cairns. Gradually, from his hands a palatial shelter grew organically: above the ground-floor lambing shed he created a bedroom so as to be close at hand and then lofts for storing hay and fleeces.
